Lactic Acid

๐Ÿ† hero ingredient Tier 1 Evidence

what it does

An alpha-hydroxy acid derived from fermented sugars that exfoliates the skin surface while simultaneously drawing in moisture. The gentlest of the common AHAs and a great entry point for acid beginners.

dermai take

AHA with a moisturiser mode โ€” it exfoliates dead cells AND pulls water in. Gentler than glycolic, kinder to sensitive skin. Do NOT use in the same session as retinoids though โ€” your face will absolutely rage.

targets these concerns

don't combine with

Tretinoinmedium

Combining lactic acid with tretinoin significantly raises irritation risk, especially for sensitive or retinoid-naive skin.

๐Ÿ’ก Alternate nights โ€” never apply both in the same session.

Lactic acid is gentler than glycolic, but combining with retinol still elevates irritation risk for sensitive or retinol-naive skin.

๐Ÿ’ก Generally fine for experienced users โ€” avoid if your skin reacts easily.
